A CITY FOR CORDUROY

Don Freeman's New York

This exhibition presents the gamut of Freeman’s New York work, from his lively and humane depictions of ordinary New Yorkers and the city in the 1930s, to his illustrated scenes of the Broadway backstage, to his children’s books inspired by the city. The exhibition features drawings, paintings, publications, and prints, as well as the artist’s original studies and sketches of Corduroy and other characters. It also includes an interactive coloring activity, a child-centric video tour, and flip the flap activity for younger visitors.

"The show, brimming with lively sketches, oils and lithographs, is perfectly child friendly. Low-placed display cases make it easy for kids to see early sketches for “Corduroy” and Freeman’s other books, while a small stage, like the one in 1953’s “Pet of the Met” — about a mousey maestro at the opera house — makes a perfect perch to read them on."
